Hi! How are you?

2016-10-13 9:31 AM

Welcome to the Oleum Vera Community Blog. We’re so glad you’re here—and so excited to finally start this adventure! In the coming months, we hope to build an online space that’s fun, interesting, and a little bit cozy, too.

We’ll be sharing tips and news on everything we, at OV, are passionate about. That means natural skin care, hair care and body care, of course; but we also love chatting and sharing info on tons more topics, ranging from superfoods to the organic lifestyle, to self-care in the iPad era.

In the meantime, create an Oleum Vera account, won’t you? It’s the best way to hear about special deals, new releases and more, plus it comes with 30 free natural body care recipes! Of course, you can also find us on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest

This is a space for discovery: a little corner of the Internet where you can always expect to learn something new, meet a like-minded soul, or just get your weekly dose of advice on how to take care of yourself, the natural way.

This is also a space for creativity. At OV, we want to empower you to tailor your natural beauty regimen to your own needs and lifestyle. We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all body care, and so we’re committed to passing on the knowledge you need to adapt our products any way you like.

Lastly, this is a space for inclusivity. No matter where you are in your natural journey—whether you know all or nothing about the beauty of essential oils—, we’re just happy to have you!

What we do, and why we do it

2016-10-12 10:40 AM

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Sure—that sounds fair, right? And we do love a good picture, as evidenced by the gorgeous shots you can see all across the OV website.

Still, we thought you might want to know a bit more about what Oleum Vera stands for, what we do, and why we do it—and so we settled to write this blog post. We hope it answers your most burning questions, but if it doesn’t, feel free to ask in the comments!

Oleum Vera was born out of the idea that people shouldn’t have to put things on their skin that they wouldn’t trust enough to put in their mouth. Sounds simple? It is. That’s why we liked it.

In an era where mainstream beauty products are manufactured using more chemicals than ever (check out this post by Dr. Axe for more on that), a re-centering of natural self-care seemed like it was in order. And while other companies were already doing some cool stuff in that vein, we felt something was missing: a way for people like us—people who like plants, the Earth, and being able to pronounce the names of ingredients—to start from scratch, with just the pure, unprocessed goodness Nature has to offer, and build a new kind of whole-body care routine for themselves.

And that’s when we knew we had to make Oleum Vera happen: this was something we hadn’t seen anywhere else. While essential oils and plant-based butters have been used for millennia for their innumerable health benefits, these beautiful ingredients still remain tragically underused.

Look, we get it: it’s tempting to bully your skin and hair into submission using harsh chemicals and products advertised as miracle solutions to end all imperfections. We’ve done it—time and time again. But one day, we got tired. Tired of the lack of durable results, and tired of throwing money at companies that don’t care about us, or the environment.

With Oleum Vera, we hope to offer an alternative to these companies and their products. We think it feels (and looks!) better to be kind to your body and the planet. And that’s why we want to empower humans to reclaim their body-care routine in a way that simply feels right.

So that’s—in a nutshell—why Oleum Vera came to be. In the coming weeks, we’ll share more about our values, the ingredients we bring you and why we choose them. In the meantime, we hope you’ll ask us questions, too (we love questions). You can do that in the comments on this blog post, or on Facebook, Instagram or Pinterest. And check back in—we’ll be posting again soon.

P.S.: Have you made an OV account yet? If not, we recommend you do: every subscription comes with 30 free natural body care recipes to get you started, and it’s definitely the best way to stay on top of OV news and special offers.

In previous posts, we told you about how Oleum Vera came to be, and what it aspires to become. Today, we want to tell you a bit more about the values that keep us going. And while we like to keep things positive around here (yay, positivity!), in this case, it feels right to start by making it clear what OV does not stand for—what it takes a stand against, you might say:

Synthetic, GMO-packed ingredients — Because the chemicals massively used by the beauty industry are often untested, and we don’t trust that stuff with our skin and hair.

One-size-fits-all mass production — Because everybody’s different, and we’re not interested in using products that fail to recognize that.

False organic claims — The words “natural” and “organic” get thrown around a lot these days. Big companies have started realizing that more and more consumers care what we put on our skin, and some of them try to take advantage without actually going the extra mile. Not cool.

Unsustainable sourcing — Because we think taking good care of our bodies should go hand in hand with taking good care of the planet.

Pretty straightforward, right? To sum it up, Oleum Vera is anti-GMO, pro-customization, pro-organic and pro-sustainability. We’re DIY people on a DIY mission: empowering other humans to reclaim their body care routine in a way that feels good—really good.

So what do you think? Does that sound like something you’d want to get on board with? Let us know in the comments, and if you haven’t already, do make an OV account—it comes with free recipes! As always, you can find us on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest. We can’t wait to hear from you!

P.S.: We’ll be updating on here regularly, and soon, we’ll be making special posts featuring some choice star ingredients, but in the meantime, we do recommend this article over Dr. Axe about the ‘13 Best Ingredients for Your Natural Skin Care Ritual’—it mentions a lot of our favorites at OV!

Organic is serious business

2016-10-07 11:22 AM

In our last post, we talked about the values at the core of the OV project, and we mentioned our stand against false organic claims. Today, we want to talk about why and how we make sure to seek out truly organic ingredients for the OV products.

In the past few years, more and more companies have started to realize that people care about where the stuff they buy—food, cosmetics, you name it—came from, how it was made, and how it can impact our bodies. Unfortunately, some of these companies, instead of taking stock, truly looking at their own practices and changing them for the best, chose to go the sneaky way; these are the companies that make all sorts of claims about their products being “natural” or “organic”, without any evidence or independent analysis to back it up! Boo.

Luckily, there are now several independent organizations that have made it their mission to monitor organic claims and double- and triple-check whether ingredients and products said to be “organic” truly are, well, organic. ECOCERT and the USDA are two of those. Check them out—the OV products are Certified Organic by both.

So what does “organic” mean, anyway? Simply put, it means GMO-free products grown without fertilizers, pesticides and other synthetic chemicals. Sounds reasonable, right? A lot of us already try to eat as organic as possible, typically for health-related or environmental reasons—we think both are great! To find out more, check out this article about the ‘Top 10 Reasons to Support Organic in the 21st Century’—it makes some pretty great points!

But what about other products—say, the ones we put on our skin or in our hair to help it feel better or grow stronger? We don’t know about you, but we want to be just as careful about those as we are about our food. That’s why when it comes to the OV products, every ingredient that can be organic, is organic.

Hey, do you follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest yet? If you don’t, you might wanna: it’s shaping up to be a great community over there! Also, if you haven’t made an OV account yet, you totally should (hello, free recipes?). Thanks for reading, and drop us a line in the comment section if you have something you want to share or ask us about.
